Biography

Eduardo Pla (1952 – 2012)

Eduardo Pla was born in Buenos Aires in 1952. He was an Argentine-Italian artist who lived for over 20 years in Europe and the United States. This gave him the opportunity to draw from and project his work at the very heart of postmodernism. He returned to Buenos Aires in 1996.

A pioneer in using electronic-digital systems as a means of artistic expression, his solid background included studies in architecture, visual communication, design and urbanism (1970-1974). In 1984, he obtained a Master in Art Direction from the European Institute di Design in Milano, Italy.

From a very early stage, he ventured into the production of music videos (Blue Monday, for the paradigmatic British band New Order), and the use of technologies such as video graphics and 3D animation; working well ahead of his time in new technologies and in considering the possibility of other optical-philosophical realities. A versatile artist, he was also connected with fashion through the development of digital designs for fabrics. His technical skills and creativity unfold in each of his artworks. Among other important distinctions, he was awarded the Excellence Award in Computer Art (1988, New York, USA), the first prize at the Art Addiction, the Venice Autumn Annual (1999, Venice, Italy), and first prize at the National Sculpture Competition on the 100th Anniversary of the city of Neuquén (2004, Neuquén, Argentina).

Pla plunged into the boundless field of the most sophisticated technological art, thus enriching the viewer’s perception with new ways of interaction. His paintings and geometrical artwork generate fascinating optical effects through the use of colour and light, the two main elements of human vision.

Among his main exhibitions are: Computer and Art (1990, Lugano, Switzerland); 10 years of Digital Art (1995, Palais de Glace, Buenos Aires, Argentina); 15 years of Digital Art (2000, Museum of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires, Argentina); the monumental installation the Spazio Alchimia sphere at the Hotel Lido, Venice, curated by Pierre Restany (2001, Italy); the III Mercosur Biennial (2001, Porto Alegre, Brazil); El Sueño de la Esfera (2002, Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires); 20 years of Digital Art – a multimedia installation and stunning holographic projection by the lake of the Galileo Galilei Planetarium (2005, Buenos Aires); the Peninsula Art Tour (2006, Bomarzo, Italy and Lisbon, Portugal); Los Paralelos del Mundo (2007, Punta del Este, Uruguay), and the Third International Biennial of Art in Beijing, (2008, Beijing, China). During 2011, the artist celebrated his “40 Years in Art” with a huge multimedia exhibition at the Centro Cultural Recoleta in Buenos Aires, and launched his book “Pla, 40 Years in Art” at El Ateneo Grand Splendid.

Eduardo Pla, an unclassifiable artist, is a clear example of the art of his time; according to Pierre Restany, “a perfect visual creator of the immediate future.”
